When You Listen To Music

When You Listen To Music

The best songs are not the ones that you’re listening for, but the ones that you don’t hear coming.

If you’re listening to a pop song there are about three stages.

The first stage is not when you notice it’s playing and not when you listen to the lyrics.

The second stage is when you notice and start to like it. In just a couple plays you know most of the lyrics, the rhythms, the ups and the downs. When it plays on the radio you turn it up. When you see it’s playing, you mention that you love this song and then you start your solo.

The third stage is pretty much the death. You’ve listening to this darn song like 700 times and it sucks. I mean how many times can you listen to Radioactive before you want to smash your radio! Maybe 46 at most.

But I’m only talking about pop music that comes and goes (except the ones the radio dj’s still seem to like for like ever).

But…

Occasionally, you’ll listen to a song but never get tired of it. You could listen to it a million times and still love it even more than the last time you heard it.

This is what I love about music. There are like 35 billion songs out there and they are all…music. Music can be so many different things. I’m not just talking about genres but about the feeling you get when you listen to it. So out all these 35 billion songs maybe 1 out of 100 really sticks with you, probably less.

You don’t get 35 million favorite songs in life so appreciate that moment when you can feel your whole body singing along to the beat.

Happy Favorite Song!

Another at the moment song…

“When I’m with you there’s no place I’d rather be…n-n-no no place I’d rather be…”

I turned on Spotify on my iPhone and tried to skip the least amount of songs as possible.

A song I wasn’t familiar with, Rather Be, was playing so I kept listening.

We’re a thousand miles from comfort,
We have traveled land and sea
But as long as you are with me,
There’s no place I rather be

I would wait forever,
Exulted in the scene
As long as I am with you,
My heart continues to beat

With every step we take,
Kyoto to The Bay
Strolling so casually
We’re different and the same,
Gave you another name
Switch up the batteries

If you gave me a chance I would take it
It’s a shot in the dark but I’ll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can’t shame me
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be

No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be, oh oh

We staked out on a mission
To find our inner peace
Make it everlasting
So nothing’s incomplete

It’s easy being with you,
Sacred simplicity
As long as we’re together,
There’s no place I’d rather be

With every step we take,
Kyoto to The Bay
Strolling so casually
We’re different and the same,
Gave you another name
Switch up the batteries

If you gave me a chance I would take it
It’s a shot in the dark but I’ll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can’t shame me
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be

No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be
Be, oh

Be, be, be, be, be, be, be, be, be

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
If you gave me a chance I would take it
It’s a shot in the dark but I’ll make it
Know with all of your heart, you can’t shame me
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be

No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be
No, no, no, no place I rather be
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be

Synonyms of Rather Be: astonishing, astounding, blindsiding, dumbfounding, eye-opening, flabbergasting, jarring, jaw-dropping, jolting, shocking, startling, stunning, stupefying. Amazing.

The music video is a whole new story: ○□◇△.

Through out the music video four shapes occur. On the sheets, lanterns, money, eyes, etc. It’s pretty creepy actually and is definitely a must see because if it’s oddness.

The Bits And Bobs of Lorde- Guest Writer

The Bits And Bobs of Lorde- Guest Writer

Where should I start? I guess most people would start at the beginning, but for some reason, I’m not going too. I’m going to start here:

The click of a computer key, the enter key. It was the day my mom had bought tickets to the Lorde concert. After several weeks of anxious waiting, the day came. My mom and I brought my two best friends. We drove to where the concert was held and after many photos and fuss, we found our seats. To us, it seemed as if we waited forever for the lights to dim. After the introductory group played a few songs, although it seemed like many more, we were ready for Lorde. Or, I guess, we thought we were.

Let’s just say, we were not expecting this.
The lighting was mesmerizing. The lights would flash on and off according to the beat in different colors.
A giant vintage frame held a giant screen. And on the screen several clips were projected during certain songs; but mostly on the screen was a live camera of Lorde.
We had so much fun at the concert! I remember it so clearly, as if it was yesterday.

Now let’s talk about Lorde herself:

Her debut single “Royals” was released August 2013 and was immediately a worldwide hit. It was nominated “Best Song of the Year” by several grand media-outlets and got many different awards, one of them being a Grammy! Just one month later, in September 2013, her album Pure Heroine was released. Many, including me, fell in love with her and her music. She continues to inspire everyone with her music.

Lorde is also a giant fashion icon for teens all around the world.
She has appeared on numerous magazine covers, including Vogue, Clash, and Fashion. Her style is quite unique yet very beautiful.

The Weepies-Say I Am You
You never hear anybody mention the Weepies but seriously this music should not go unheard.
Because they are in fact wife and husband there voices flow together perfectly creating a soft acoustic sound. They both started off as solo musicians. I can’t say that they were top charts or sung around every household. Anyway, the two “solo so long” artists got a hold of each other’s CD’s and were on THEIR top charts and sung around THIER household at least.
They met, fell in love, had some children and made some great albums. Period.

The first song I ever heard from their album “Say I Am You” was Stars.
“Tangerines are hanging heavy…”

My dad played it for me and it was good. It didn’t seem “great” like “wow” great. But the story does not end there. Somehow, slowly, don’t even know how, I fell in love with these 13 amazing (including “Stars”).

You know how sometimes the first time you listen to a song or even the 10th time is never the same as the 30th, 52nd. Yes, I have probably listened to these songs that many times. On my iPod they are always on the playlist “Top 25 Most Played”. “Nobody Know Me At All”, “Painting By Chagall”, “Citywide Rodeo”, “Slow Pony Home”…

Citywide Rodeo is about thinking that “you’re not good for anything, the world makes you feel so small”.
Originally, when I listened to this song I didn’t think about it having a meaning or what it meant. To try and post the best possible blog write up I researched the meanings of all their songs on songmeanings.com. I was surprised about how well each comment captured each song.
For this particular song there were very interesting responses. To sum it up, this song is about how we constantly judge ourselves depending on what others think of us.
“You wonder how fast you’ll go when you hit the air.” Directly quoting form songmeanings.com (pinkbullets63) “getting bucked off a bull’s back”. Basically, how much it will hurt when you are turned down by everybody.
“There’s dust in the stadium seats” meaning all the enemies that you think you have, watching you get bucked off this bull, are dusty and unoccupied. As Pinkbullet63 says you are your worst enemy, really.

I scrolled through the comments and came across Celestial Theorist’s comment:

Here’s a sum up. But first, here are the lyrics.

Citywide rodeo, you set on the stage
Where all the clowns will go when they feel their age

I know that you think you’re not good for anything
The world makes you feel so small
Get on your wooden horse
This is a ride, not a fight
No need to save face, say goodnight, Grace
“Good night, Grace.”

There’s dust on the stadium seats, there’s dust in your hair
You wonder how fast you’ll go when you hit the air

And oh, isn’t it strange how things can change you?
And oh, isn’t it plain that some things unname you
So don’t ask anybody else.

Citywide rodeo, step into your car
Look up at the indigo and pick out your star.

It’s over the course of a life time, says this commenter.

The first verse you are a child, you fell small compared to the stage.
You start to grow up and you are now on the stage, everybody is judging, but in reality, literal or metaphorical, there is dust in the stadium seats. Nobody, just you. You wonder how fast you’ll go when you hit the air. Instead of being the great person you wanted to be you are labeled with that want. Of course, this all relates to being up on stage.
You are growing old now and you get in your car and you pick out your star. Death.

Please listen to these songs! And don’t forget to think about what they mean as you listen because sometimes there can be meanings hidden under the lyrics!

At the Moment Songs

At the Moment Songs

At the Moment Songs

Usually I have one song I really like at the moment:

Just Breathe (Willie Nelson Cover): I first heard this song browsing YouTube for Willie Nelson songs. It was soon the only song I thought of for awhile. I not only love this song (originally by Pearl Jam), but I love the music video too. Willie Nelson sung this song with his son, Lucas Wilson.

Just Breathe
These Flowers (Martha Wainwright): I had, and still have a great idea for this song but I’m still working on it. My brother even made a device to help me make “it”. I hope that one of these days I will be able to show it to you, whether it’s in the next year (because it will take that long) or the next six years…

These Flowers
Cups (Anna Kendrick): If you read my blog frequently that you know that I love this song so much, I even wrote a post on it (https://misstweenster.com/2013/10/06/when-im-gone-cups/)

Cups
Don’t Forget (Martha Wainwright): My favorite line of this song is “Don’t forget that I always will always love you, just a reminder that I hope you pave your pathway…”

Martha Wainwright

Mirrors (Justin Timberlake): It’s more of one of those songs that I always have stuck in my head (like right now) than my new favorite song, but I will still mention it…

Mirrors
When I Was Your Man (Bruno Mars): I had this song stuck in my head for so long. I was even recording myself singing it… I love all of Bruno Mars’ songs but this is my favorite song.

When I Was Your Man
Count On Me (Bruno Mars): This is the best song ever to sing along too ever, I love it, although maybe not as much as the first time.

Count On Me
It Will Rain (Bruno Mars): I never had much interest in this song until I actually listened to it again and again. It’s funny how sometimes I have to listen to a song more  than once to love it…

It Will Rain

Solitaire (The Carpenters): This is such a great song… Listen to it right now!

Solitaire

What If (Coldplay): This song never gets old… There are so many great songs out there but this one stands out a lot. I try not to listen to it so much so that I don’t get to tired of it.

What If

The Scientist (Coldplay): I love the ad so much… Be sure to check my blog posts if you like the ad that was done with this song because I definitely will write about it.

The Scientist

Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Elton John): I remember singing this song with my dad at the piano when I was really little.

Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me

Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word (Elton John): It’s crazy, but you know how some songs you never listen to even though they are really famous… well, maybe not, but that’s what happened with this song.

Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word

Roar (Katy Perry): She’s got such a powerful voice, especially in this song.

Roar
Royals (Lorde): Why I like this song, I don’t know, but it is pretty good…catchy too.

Royals
Just Give Me a Reason (P!nk): I don’t know what to say except that this song was stuck in my head forever.

Just Give Me A Reason

The Song of the Heart (Prince): Isn’t this a great song? It’s from Happy Feet!

Song of the Heart

Sacrifice (Sinead O’Connor): This song was sung as a tribute to Elton John. I love both versions to this song for different reasons.

Sacrifice

Antes de las Seis (Shakira):  I didn’t discover this song sung by Shakira but song on the Voice… I love this song, even though I don’t really know what it means.

Antes de la Seis

Make You Feel My Love (Adele): Adele, you are great singer!
Make You Feel My Love
One and Only (Adele): Same thing, plus this is my favorite song sung by Adele.

One and Only

Sometimes You Can’t Make it One Your Own (U2): Just recently started listening to U2 again (the last time I listened to it was in Maine a long time ago)…

Sometimes You Can'r Make It On Your Own
Strange Boat (The Waterboys): This is song about how strange life is… I love sing-songy songs like this one. (Does that make sense?)

Strange Boat
Skyfall (Adele): Adele really did a great jog with this song, it worked perfectly with the movie…

Skyfall
Read My Mind (The Killers): This is one of those songs that is perfect for singing along to…

Read My IMind
Human (The Killers): The only thing I don’t like about this song is “are we human or are we dancer”…Whhhhhat?

Human
Let her Go (Passenger): The whole reason why I’m doing this 1000 word post is because of this song… I only just discovered it… Right now it’s my at the moment song…

Let Her Go

La Vie en Rose (Grace Jones): So dramatic!

La Vie en Rose
I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor): The only thing I don’t like about this song is that it has a end!

I Will Survive

Slipping Through My Fingers (Meryl Streep): I’ve just started learning this song… By the way it’s my highest played song on my iPod…

Slipping Through My Fingers
Lean One Me (Bill Withers): Whenever this song is mentioned I start singing it!

Oh, just for the record, these are not all at the same moment, more like over the past two years!

Post your ‘At the Moment Song(s) below!

When I’m Gone (Cups)

When I’m Gone (Cups)

When I first watched this movie, I didn’t pay much attention to this song, but that changed. I soon found a video of Anna Kendrick, the leading actor in Pitch Perfect, doing this type of game with cups. I found it very interesting. I was soon banging cups on tables learning this cup game. I immediately became obsessed with this video:

https://www.youtube.com

Here’s a quick overview of the history of this song:

In 1931 the Carter’s Family recorded this song.

In 2009 Lulu and the Lampshades covered this song, receiving many hits.

And recently Pitch Perfect made this song a huge hit all over again.

Lyrics:

I got my ticket for the long way round
Two bottles of whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I’m leaving tomorrow
What do you say ?

When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my hair
You’re gonna miss me everywhere
Oh, you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my walk
You’re gonna miss me by my talk
Oh, you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

I got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest of views
It’s got mountains, it’s got rivers
Its got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my walk
You’re gonna miss me by my talk
Oh, you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my hair
You’re gonna miss me everywhere
Oh, you’re sure gonna miss me when I’m gone

When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my walk
You’re gonna miss me by my talk
Oh, you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

Maybe it’s You-The Carpenters 1979

Maybe it’s You-The Carpenters 1979

One of my favorite Carpenters song is ‘Maybe It’s You’. The album that this track was on, ‘Greatest Hits’, was my first album I got. I remember dancing around the living room to ‘Top of the World’ and singing along to ‘Sing’. . . la la la la la la, my nickname. I used to listen to those two songs only, practically, but now, six years later I listen to all of them.

This song is one of my new discovers. I especially love the melody.

I imagine singing to it.

I would sing. . .

Maybe it’s you

Maybe it’s me

Maybe it’s just the constant rhythm of the sea

Maybe it’s just that I’ve never been

The kind who can pass a lucky penny by

Maybe it’s wise

Maybe it’s not

Maybe it’s you who brought the caring I’d forgot

Isn’t it nice to talk about the special way

That you smile whenever I’m around

Rising on the shore

The ocean came

Walks along the waves of velveteen

His only thought

Was love for me

Couldn’t we stay?

Or must we go

Couldn’t we stay?

And watch the splashing rock we throw

Only a fool would want to leave this paradise

That I find whenever you’re around

Only a fool

Isn’t it nice to talk about the special way

That you smile whenever I’m around

Rising on the shore

The ocean came

Walks along the waves of velveteen

His only thought

Was love for me

Couldn’t we stay?

Or must you go

Couldn’t we stay?

And watch the splashing rocks we throw

Only a fool would want to leave the paradise

That I find whenever you’re around

Only a fool

Only a fool
